Tips for Moving During the Holidays

December 18th, 2020

With the holiday season comes thoughts of presents, dinners with family, and cuddling close with loved ones. Very few people associate this time with finding safe movers to relocate their lives to another place, but sometimes it’s necessary during the holidays due to work or other life events.

Moving is always stressful, but trying to do it during the holidays adds an extra layer of stress that can severely impact the holiday spirit. Here are some tips to make sure that your move goes as smoothly as possible this holiday season:

Set Time Aside to Pack

While designating time to pack is good advice any time of year, it’s crucial to your move during the holidays to allow extra time to pack up your belongings. Between shopping for gifts, attending holiday parties, and all the usual activities that people engage in this time of year, it’s easy to let packing fall by the wayside, leaving you scrambling to get ready for moving day.

One way to manage packing during the holiday season is to get friends and loved ones involved. They can provide support by helping move boxes to a staging area if you have one, watching children so you can work uninterrupted, or simply offer emotional support by having a relaxing conversation after a few hours of packing.

Make Your Time at the Post Office Count

If you’re the type of person to send holiday cards or have to mail gifts to loved ones every year, then you should take advantage of your trip to the post office to mail announcements of your upcoming move. Sending out these notifications can help inform loved ones of your change of address, but it can also ensure that you receive any cards or packages they’re sending to you.

With the notifications mailed, you should also be sure to inform the post office of your forwarding address to ensure that you get mail from any senders you might have forgotten to send an update to.

Don’t Forget Your Holiday Spirit!

Counterintuitive as it might be, it’s worth thinking about decorating a bit to help get into the holiday spirit. Admittedly, you probably won’t have nearly as many decorations as you’d like, but that doesn’t mean you can’t still have a tree or other decorations set out. It’s best to think about them strategically, though, because whatever you put up will need to be packed up before your move.
